DRACULA, THE GREAT UNDEAD
(1985) Hosted by Vincent Price. I expected to begin this documentary on the real Dracula, Vlad Tepes, and be bored within minutes, butI was wrong. Between the horror legend presence of Vincent Price lies well shot dramatization of the battles and triumphs of the infamous Vlad Dracula. The imagery is beautiful and grotesque; the filmmakers pull no punches as rows of the impaled hang before the setting sun. The film then moves into the realms of fiction, discussing the early portrayals of Dracula in film. The film concludes with reenactments of rituals in modern day Transylvania villages; these rituals are exercises in pushing the soul to heaven and keeping the soul from the grips of the vampire. This is an excellent documentary for the fans of the legend of Vlad Tepes and the tale of the formidably romantic vampire, the best Vlad Tepes battle scenes you will ever see. The antagonist can't seem to forget his ex-wife, so he believes she is riding around with him in his 1960's black English Ford, Thames Van as he follows and harasses his ex-wife's new husband and her son. The camera is in the van alot, and the chase scenes are shot very well. When the protagonist pulls over in broad daylight, the van pulls over behind him; the protagonist gets out of his car to inspect the van; the whole time he looks in the van the antagonist is hiding and the camera's POV is inside the van--it's a nice moment in horror van cinema.
